Newcomers' Guide to the internet

If you are not familiar with the workings of the internet;

Domains: One of the first things you will need is a 'Domain' a.k.a. web address. To get ideas and check whether a domain name you are interested in for your website is available and reserve if it is, we recommend you use Domainsbot.com. (new window)

Hosting: For your website to be on the net 24/7 you do not even need your own computer. We upload pages and content to hired disk space on a 'Web Host' or 'Web Server' which has a super-fast connection to the backbone of the internet all day, every day.

Hosting and Domain costs

There are many thousands of hosts out on the internet. From our hands-on experience, the best value for money providing a reliable service and good customer support is One.com who recently trippled your webspace at no extra cost.

None of these costs include VAT unless specified;

Hosting: 3000MB webspace = 90p p/m
10000MB webspace = £1.90 p/m
25000MB webspace = £3.60 p/m

This service covers the requirements of most regular sites, however live Multimedia Streaming and E-Commerce trading sites will be taken to a more specialist host. To give you an idea; We have a little music on the multimedia page but not live or on high demand, so don't need specialist hosts and we fit into the 3000MB easily.
You would only need to look at larger spaces if you are storing thousands of high quality pictures, hours of video, or hundreds of MP3s.

Domain names have an annual fee; this varies depending on the address suffix

Domains: .co.uk = £6 p/a
.com = £9 p/a
.net = £9 p/a
.org = £9 p/a
.biz = £18 p/a
.info = £18 p/a

A hypothetical annual total

As long as your website is not live streaming audio/video or trading as an eShop you could probably use the minimum host pack, and if you choose a .co.uk domain, Total = £19.74

Digital Media

Annual Total including VAT
£19.74 with .co.uk
£23.27 with .com .net .org
£33.84 with .biz .info

Compare that to the price of advertising space in your local paper or shop window. By the way; we set all this up for you.
